Weaving has led me down two divergent paths. The one most traveled is a metaphysical one manifested in symbolic storytelling. I have used tapestry to explore my own attitude toward life and the interlacing of people, character, and place. The other path reflects the realistic representation of still life, but always with an active twist.

For a number of years, it has been my practice to arise early to meditate, journal and then weave. Perhaps as a result of this routine my work often has an autobiographical quality. Out of these early morning sessions, initially a series of women emerged in which their eyes provide a strong focal point. For me eyes have a spiritual power. For example, crossed eyes can project a sense of frustration and absurdity. However the same crossed eyes hint at the possibility of a soul on a personal introspective journey. The series concludes fully actualized with Orion.

My aim is the refinement of the craft of weaving; a combination of shapes, space, color line, movement, and change. The fact that I have chosen one of the slowest possible mediums is still a mystery to me. I think it chose me.

Pat Williams teaches art in and weaves in Habersham County, Georgia. Her work has been exhibited nationally and has won several awards. She is a member of the American Tapestry Alliance, Tapestry Weavers South, the National Art Education Association, and juror for the Center Gallery at Sautee Nacoochee Community Association.
