Penland’s annual benefit auction is a gala weekend in the North Carolina mountains featuring the sale of more than 200 works in books, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, painting, printmaking, photography, textiles, wood, and other media. The Penland auction is one of the premier craft collecting events in the Southeast and the perfect opportunity to support Penland’s educational programs. September 2010
Calls for Entries + Proposals November 2010 • "Small Tapestry International 2: Passages" Call for Entries American Tapestry Alliance’s juried, international exhibition of small-scale tapestries will open during 2011. The anticipated run of the show is from the spring through the fall, although the dates of the show may be extended further into the year. Artists are encouraged to consider the technical, metaphorical and/or conceptual implications of the theme of the show, Passages, as they develop work to submit. Innovation and experimentation within the technique of tapestry are welcomed. All works must be mounted. Lectures and Symposia July 2010 • ATA Educational Forum at Convergence 2010 Lecture Join us for the American Tapestry Alliance’s Biennial Membership Meeting and Educational Forum. October 2010 • 2010 TSA Symposium Textiles and Settlement: From Plains Space to Cyber Space Symposium Oct. 6-9. The 2010 TSA Symposium, Textiles and Settlement: From Plains Space to Cyber Space, will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska (Home of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Textiles, Clothing & Design, the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, and the International Quilt Study Center & Museum) October 6 - 9 2010. Keynote speaker for the symposium will be Sheila Kennedy, an architect, whose Portable Light project creates new ways to provide renewable power in solar textiles that can be adapted to meet the needs of people in different cultures and global regions. Workshops July 2010 • Tapestry Enchantment Workshop ATA's 2010 Educational Retreat offers workshops taught by acclaimed tapestry artists Lynne Curran and James Koehler in July 2010. Following Convergence 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the retreat will take place at St. John's College in Santa Fe, starting the evening of Sunday, July 25 and ending Wednesday, July 28, 2010. [Note: The retreat offering these workshops has filled.] • Natural Dyes Workshop Workshop Pre-conference workshop in conjunction with TSA's 2010 Symposium in Lincoln, Nebraska, Oct. 6-9. The workshop will be lead by Dominique Cardon and Elena Phipps. Dominique Cardon, renowned French scholar, is the author of numerous publications on the subject of dyes, dye history and technology including her most recent book Natural Dyes, Sources, Tradition , Technology and Science (Archetype Publications, London, 2007) a monumental and comprehensive study. Elena Phipps (Director-at-large, TSA) has worked with dyes and dye analysis for many years at the Metropolitan Museum, and her forthcoming publication, Cochineal Red, the art history of a color (Metropolitan Museum and Yale University Press) is expected Jan 2010. It will give you the foundation you need to understand tapestry weaving and be able to express yourself in this wonderful medium. There are plans for a simple, but competent loom, information on the equipment and materials you'll need for weaving, and instructions on doing the basic techniques that you need to know to complete your own tapestry. There is also information on finishing and mounting your tapestry for exhibition. Even if you have been weaving for awhile, Tapestry 101 information on all aspects of tapestry weaving that will be a help to you. There are 108 pages of written information, diagrams, and photographs with a spiral binding so that you can lay the book flat beside your loom as a reference while you're weaving.
